Strange Surge in Suicides Troubles Uruguay, the 'Happiest' South American Country

Despite being South America's 'happiest' country, Uruguay's suicide rate is more than double the average for Latin America and the Caribbean. Last year, 823 individuals committed suicide, marking the highest record in the country of 3.4 million people. Since 2010, there's been an alarming increase of nearly 50% in the suicide rate. Suicide is the leading cause of violent death in the country, surpassing both traffic accidents and homicides. This is partly due to loss of emotional bonds, physical deterioration and the chronic illnesses and difficulty to seek help. [Source](
